     About Us

The Humanities and Sciences High School's and International Commerce High School's emphasis is to prepare adult high school students academically for postsecondary education, and occupational education incorporating the following areas:

    Social Responsibility

    • Producing knowledgeable and responsible participants in American democracy as part of the global society with a broad based knowledge of history, cultures, geography, science, and mathematics.

    Employability

    • Development of basic skills (reading, writing, speaking, and thinking in English, numeracy, problem-solving, and high order thinking skills).
    • Development of habits, attitudes, and values that are necessary for productivity.

    Lifelong Learning

    • Development of the ability to learn about and adapt to the changes that will occur throughout life after the completion of initial formal education.

The high schools' objectives are attainable through the commitment to provide a proactive learning environment.

Postsecondary education and occupational education: the content standards define the knowledge students should possess. They also provide details for the more general, abstract goals of education by specifying what thinking and performance capabilities students should master. Standards outline the academic content and skills students should master by graduation from high school.

Social responsibility: progress in social responsibility for an individual student can be measured by reviewing individual portfolios and competency examinations. Students have a broad based knowledge of history, cultures, geography, science, and mathematics.

Employability in the workplace: progress in employability for an individual student can be measured by reviewing competency examination scores. Students must master the standards at or above the national norm to earn credit for completed courses. Students have developed their basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking in English, numeracy, problem solving, and higher order thinking skills. Individual students demonstrate the development of habits, attitudes, and values by their commitment to academic participation.

Lifelong learning: the high schools ensure that individual students have developed the ability to be an independent, self-directed learner, and to use the tools necessary for lifelong learning.

Overall, the high schools missions and objectives are accomplished by a well rounded liberal arts and sciences curriculum; highly qualified, certified faculty; collaborative projects with fellow institutions that promote the study of liberal arts and sciences; the interpretive process tailored to the residential and distance learning model; and the promotion of a rich appreciation for diversity and tolerance through the study of various cultures which in turn encourages a sense of global community.
